Waxing Poetic: Trader Joe’s

The big news today, the moment we’ve all been waiting for (countless friends and over 500 locals who organized a petition) has arrived, bringing our very own Trader Joe’s to Virginia Beach! For those of you who’ve never been to one, you need to go. For those of you who have, you know what I mean when I say I’m EXCITED!

Before this, the closest one was in Newport News, a 30-40 minute drive, depending on traffic. We’d make the trek every month or so (not often enough) cramming our cart with as much as we can push, (which is alot!). Tim absolutely loathes grocery shopping, but will suggest a ‘day trip’ to Trader Joe’s, which gives you some perspective of how much we adore this place. It’s like the Starbucks of grocery stores, friendly and laidback. (their ‘uniforms’ are hawaiian shirts-how cool is that?) Discriminating quality, exciting variety, lots of healthy, organic ingredients topped with great prices. My eyes pop when I’m cruising the aisles salivating over the tremendous array of tempting foodstuff. It feels like I’ve been living under a rock and have finally come into the light. Sounds dramatic, even spoiled, but true. Probably because we don’t live somewhere like Asheville, which has the coolest store called Greenlife, we don’t even have a Whole Foods.

It feels kind of disloyal that I didn’t turn out for the 9am gala opening, but I’m not a morning person. I need some space and peace to think when I shop. Which doesn’t mean that I won’t be there in the thick of it. The plan was to get there before our little trip to the Outer Banks. That leaves me with Saturday or Sunday. Either way it will probably be mobbed. Gonna go with the flow and have fun. Better a throng of carts at colorful Trader Joe’s than the wide-open aisles and dull aura of almost any other (fill-in-the-blank) grocery store. See you there!
